Information for current international students

Visa extensions

If you had a visa that expired between 20 January 2020 and 31 July 2020 you were able to request an extension if you were not able to return home because of the travel restrictions and coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Now that travel restrictions are lifting you will not be able to extend your visa automatically and you are expected to make arrangements to leave the UK or to apply for an extension of your visa.

If your visa or leave expired between 24 January 2020 and 31 August 2020 there will be no future adverse immigration consequences if you didn’t make an application to formalise your stay during this period. However, you must now do so by 31 August 2020 or make arrangements to leave the UK.

Monitoring attendance

Usually UKVI regulations do not allow Tier 4 students to undertake distance learning courses however now due to coronavirus pandemic, UKVI do not consider it a breach of sponsor duties to offer distance learning courses to existing Tier 4 students (whether they are in the UK or have chosen to return home but wish to continue their studies).

During this period, as face-to-face teaching has been suspended, we will be monitoring attendance via coursework submission and engagement with academic staff. However, if you are self-isolating and you have left the UK, please contact your course administrator and request an authorised absence for this period.

Work

If you have been granted the right to work and you are working alongside your studies, the 20 hours a week limit still applies if you are under the student visa.
